How Running Burns Calories

Running is one of the most efficient calorie-burning exercises. The energy cost depends primarily on your body weight and distance covered. Heavier runners burn more calories per mile because they must move more mass against gravity. A commonly cited rule is approximately 100 calories per mile for a 155-pound person, but this varies significantly based on weight, pace, terrain, and running efficiency.

This calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method. Running METs range from about 8 for slow jogging to 16+ for sprinting. The MET value increases with speed because your muscles must generate more force and your cardiovascular system works harder to deliver oxygen to working muscles.

Calorie Burn Formula

Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)
Running MET ≈ 1.0 + (Speed in mph × 1.35)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does running faster burn more calories?

Per minute, yes significantly. Per mile, the difference is modest (about 5-10%). Running faster increases the MET value but you cover the distance in less time. The main benefit of faster running for calorie burn is that you can cover more distance in the same workout time.

Do heavier runners burn more calories?

Yes, significantly. A 200-pound runner burns roughly 30% more calories per mile than a 155-pound runner. Energy cost is proportional to body mass since you are moving your entire weight with each stride.

How accurate are these estimates?

MET-based estimates are typically within 10-15% of actual expenditure. Individual variation in running economy, muscle mass, and metabolism account for differences. Heart rate-based estimates from GPS watches may be slightly more personalized.
