What Is the World Handicap System?

The World Handicap System (WHS), introduced in 2020, unifies six different handicapping systems into one global standard. It allows golfers of different ability levels to compete fairly by adjusting scores based on course difficulty. The system uses Score Differentials calculated from each round to determine a Handicap Index, which is portable across all courses worldwide.

A Handicap Index represents a player's demonstrated ability on a course of standard playing difficulty. It is calculated by averaging the best Score Differentials from the most recent 20 rounds, then applying a 0.96 multiplier to encourage improvement. The lower your index, the better your golfing ability.

Handicap Index Formula

Score Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating)
Handicap Index = (Average of Best Differentials) × 0.96

The number 113 represents the standard Slope Rating. Course Rating indicates the expected score for a scratch golfer, while Slope Rating measures relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer. Slope Ratings range from 55 to 155, with 113 being the standard.

How Differentials Are Used

The WHS does not simply average all differentials. Instead, it selects the best differentials from your scoring record based on how many rounds you have posted. With 20 rounds, the best 8 differentials are averaged. With fewer rounds, the system uses proportionally fewer differentials and may apply additional adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good golf handicap?

The average male golfer has a handicap index around 14, while the average female golfer is around 27. A single-digit handicap (below 10) is considered very good and indicates a skilled player. A scratch golfer has a handicap of 0, meaning they typically shoot par or better.

How often is my handicap updated?

Under the WHS, your Handicap Index is updated overnight after you post a new score. This daily revision ensures your index always reflects your most current form. Previously, some systems only updated biweekly or monthly.

Can my handicap go up after a good round?

No. A single good round can only lower or maintain your handicap. However, your handicap can increase if older good rounds drop out of your most recent 20 and are replaced by higher differentials. The system also includes a Soft Cap and Hard Cap to prevent rapid upward movement.

What is the maximum handicap index?

Under the WHS, the maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for both men and women. This was increased from previous limits to make the game more inclusive for beginners and high-handicap players.
