Understanding the Tangent Ratio
In a right triangle, the tangent ratio of an acute angle is defined as the ratio of the length of the side opposite the angle to the length of the side adjacent to the angle. This is one of the three primary trigonometric ratios (along with sine and cosine) and is often remembered using the mnemonic SOH-CAH-TOA.
