Understanding Subtraction with Borrowing
Column subtraction is the standard method for subtracting multi-digit numbers by hand. When a digit in the minuend (top number) is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend (bottom number), borrowing is needed from the next column.
Key Concepts
Minuend
The number being subtracted from (the larger number, placed on top).
In 5032 - 1478: 5032 is the minuend
Subtrahend
The number being subtracted (placed on the bottom).
In 5032 - 1478: 1478 is the subtrahend
Borrowing
When a top digit is smaller, borrow 10 from the next column (reducing that digit by 1).
2 < 8, so borrow: 12 - 8 = 4
Steps for Column Subtraction
- Write the numbers in columns, aligning the digits by place value.
- Start from the rightmost column (ones place).
- If the top digit is smaller, borrow from the next column to the left.
- Subtract each column and write the result below.
- Continue until all columns are processed.
Checking Your Answer
You can verify your subtraction by adding the difference to the subtrahend. If the sum equals the minuend, your answer is correct: Difference + Subtrahend = Minuend.
