What Is a Reference Angle?

A reference angle is the acute angle (between 0° and 90°) formed between the terminal side of an angle and the x-axis. Reference angles simplify trigonometric calculations because the trig functions of any angle can be determined from its reference angle with the appropriate sign based on the quadrant.

Reference Angle Formulas by Quadrant

Quadrant I (0° - 90°)

The angle itself is the reference angle.

How to Find a Reference Angle
