Understanding Percentages
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin "per centum," meaning "by the hundred." Percentages are used everywhere in daily life, from sales and discounts to statistics and finance.
Three Types of Percentage Problems
Finding the Value
What is X% of Y? Multiply the percentage by the total.
Result = (X/100) x Y
Finding the Percentage
X is what percent of Y? Divide the part by the whole.
Percent = (X/Y) x 100
Finding the Total
X is Y% of what? Divide the part by the percentage.
Total = X / (Y/100)
