An hour is commonly defined as a unit of time consisting of 60 minutes, with each minute further divided into 60 seconds. The second itself is precisely defined in scientific terms. There are 24 hours in one day. Time is usually displayed using either a 12-hour or a 24-hour clock system.
12-hour Clock:
The 12-hour clock divides the day into two periods, each lasting 12 hours, numbered from 1 to 12. On most analog clocks and watches, there may not be clear indicators distinguishing morning from evening. Digital clocks, however, use “AM” (ante meridiem), meaning “before midday,” and “PM” (post meridiem), meaning “after midday.” By standard convention, 12 AM represents midnight, and 12 PM represents noon. To avoid confusion, especially for people unfamiliar with these conventions, it is often clearer to explicitly say “12 midnight” or “12 noon.”
24-hour Clock:
The 24-hour clock runs from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59, covering the entire 24-hour period from one midnight to the next. This timekeeping format is internationally recognized and helps avoid the ambiguities associated with the 12-hour system. Hours from 0 to 11 correspond to AM hours, while hours from 12 to 23 correspond to PM hours in the 12-hour system. The 24-hour clock is also commonly called “military time” due to its widespread use by militaries and other organizations worldwide requiring precise, unambiguous time notation.
