What is a Pregnancy Test and How Does It Work?

A pregnancy test detects the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after the embryo implants in the uterine wall. There are two main types of pregnancy tests:

  • Urine test (home test) โ€” Can be done at home. Most accurate when taken after a missed period.
  • Blood test โ€” Done at a clinic. Can detect pregnancy earlier than urine tests as it can measure lower hCG levels.

After fertilization, it takes about 6โ€“12 days for the embryo to implant. After implantation, hCG levels begin to rise, roughly doubling every 48โ€“72 hours.

Is It Possible to Be Pregnant and Get a Negative Test?

Yes! This is called a false negative pregnancy test. Common reasons include:

  • Testing too early โ€” hCG levels may be too low to detect
  • Diluted urine โ€” Testing later in the day when urine is less concentrated
  • Irregular cycles โ€” Ovulation may have occurred later than expected
  • Ectopic pregnancy โ€” hCG levels may rise more slowly

For the most accurate results, test with first morning urine on or after the day your period is expected.

When to Take a Pregnancy Test

Natural Conception

The calculator estimates your ovulation day as: Last Period + Cycle Length โˆ’ 14 days. After ovulation, implantation typically occurs around 9 days later. We recommend taking:

  • Blood test โ€” approximately 14 days after ovulation (hCG detectable at very low levels)
  • Urine test โ€” approximately 19 days after ovulation (hCG needs to reach ~25 mIU/mL)

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

For IVF, we calculate the equivalent ovulation day based on the transfer date and the embryo's age. Then the same timing applies for blood and urine tests.

What If I Get a Positive, Then Negative?

If your first test is positive but a later test is negative, possible explanations include:

  • Chemical pregnancy โ€” A very early miscarriage that occurs shortly after implantation
  • Expired or faulty test โ€” Using a test past its expiration date
  • Evaporation line โ€” Reading the test too late, causing a faint line to appear

Is It Possible to Get a False Positive?

Yes, although rare. Causes include certain medications containing hCG, recent miscarriage or abortion (residual hCG), ovarian cysts, and some rare medical conditions. If unsure, consult your OB-GYN. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ

Can Ectopic Pregnancy Not Show Up on Tests?

Yes. Ectopic pregnancy (gestation outside the uterus) occurs in about 1 in 100 pregnancies. Due to abnormal implantation, hCG production may be insufficient for detection, leading to a false negative.

Will a Pregnancy Test Turn Negative After Miscarriage?

Yes. After a miscarriage, hCG levels drop and should return to zero within 4โ€“6 weeks. If signs of pregnancy persist or hCG remains elevated, consult your physician as this could indicate a more serious condition.
