🩹 EASI Score Calculator — Eczema Area and Severity Index
Assess the severity of atopic dermatitis using the EASI score. Evaluate 4 body regions for affected area and severity signs (redness, thickness, scratching, lichenification). Score ranges from 0 to 72.

What Is the Eczema Area and Severity Index?
The EASI score (Eczema Area and Severity Index) is an eczema severity score used for the clinical assessment of atopic dermatitis. It assesses the spread and severity of skin lesions on a scale from 0 to 72, where 0 describes no sign of eczema and 72 corresponds to very severe disease.
You can use the EASI score to track the disease's progression or assess the effectiveness of a therapy.
What Is Atopic Dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common skin diseases. It is chronically inflammatory and triggered by various factors. The disease often occurs in childhood but improves with puberty. Typical symptoms include:
- Severe itching
- Dry skin
- Scaly skin
- Eczema
Criteria of the EASI Score
The EASI score combines area score and severity score across 4 body regions:
Area Score
| % of Affected Skin | Area Score |
|---|---|
| 0% | 0 |
| 1–9% | 1 |
| 10–29% | 2 |
| 30–49% | 3 |
| 50–69% | 4 |
| 70–89% | 5 |
| 90–100% | 6 |
Severity Score
For each body region, add the intensity of 4 signs: Redness, Thickness (swelling), Scratching, and Lichenification. Each scored 0 (None) to 3 (Severe).
How to Calculate the EASI Score
Region factors differ by age:
| Body Region | < 8 years | ≥ 8 years |

| Head & Neck | 0.2 | 0.1 |
| Trunk | 0.3 | 0.3 |
| Upper Limbs | 0.2 | 0.2 |
| Lower Limbs | 0.3 | 0.4 |
EASI Score Interpretation
| EASI Score | Eczema Severity |

| 0 | No sign of eczema |
| 0.01–1.0 | Almost clear |
| 1.1–7.0 | Mild |
| 7.1–21.0 | Moderate |
| 21.1–50.0 | Severe |

FAQs
Does the EASI score work for children?
Yes! The calculator works for both pediatric patients (under 8 years) and adults. The age group changes the region multiplication factors, particularly for Head & Neck (0.2 vs 0.1) and Lower Limbs (0.3 vs 0.4).
What is lichenification?
Lichenification refers to thickened, leathery skin with exaggerated skin lines, caused by chronic scratching or rubbing. It is a key sign of long-standing atopic dermatitis.
