What is Future Value?

Future value is the value of an asset at a specific date in the future. It measures the nominal future sum of money that a given sum of money is “worth” at a specified time in the future assuming a certain interest rate or rate of return.

Simple Interest

With simple interest, interest is earned only on the original principal:

FV = PV × (1 + r × t)

Where: FV = Future Value, PV = Present Value, r = Interest Rate, t = Time Period

Compound Interest

With compound interest, interest is earned on both the original principal and the accumulated interest:

FV = PV × (1 + i)^t

Where: FV = Future Value, PV = Present Value, i = Interest Rate per Period, t = Number of Periods

Annuity

An annuity is a series of equal payments made at regular intervals:

FV = PMT × [(1 + r)^n – 1] / r

Where: FV = Future Value, PMT = Payment Amount, r = Interest Rate per Period, n = Number of Periods
