How to Calculate Your Age
Calculating your exact age involves more than just subtracting your birth year from the current year. To get a precise age in years, months, and days, you need to account for whether you've had your birthday this year and the varying lengths of months.
The Age Calculation Method
Our calculator uses the following approach to determine your exact age:
Accounting for: Leap years, Month lengths, Birthday occurrence
- Calculate year difference: Subtract birth year from current year
- Check if birthday has passed: If not, subtract 1 from the years
- Calculate remaining months: Count months since last birthday
- Calculate remaining days: Count days since the last month anniversary
Example: Born on March 15, 1990 (calculated on February 1, 2026)
Year difference: 2026 - 1990 = 36 years
Birthday check: March 15 hasn't occurred yet in 2026
Adjusted years: 36 - 1 = 35 years
Months since birthday: 10 months (March 15 to February 1)
Days: 17 days
Result: 35 years, 10 months, 17 days
Understanding Leap Years
Leap years add an extra day (February 29) to the calendar every four years. This affects age calculations, especially for those born on February 29:
- A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4
- Exception: Years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years
- Exception to the exception: Years divisible by 400 ARE leap years
- People born on Feb 29 typically celebrate on Feb 28 or March 1 in non-leap years
