How to Calculate Fabric for Curtain Panels

Sewing your own curtains allows for custom sizing and fabric choices. To get started, you need to calculate exactly how much fabric to buy.

1. Determine Panel Type

Different tops require different hem allowances:

  • Rod Pocket: The rod slides through a channel. Requires extra fabric for the pocket and ruffle.
  • Grommet/Pleated: Modern metal rings or pinch pleats. Requires standard top hem.
  • Tab Top: Loops of fabric hang from the rod.

2. Choose Fullness Ratio

  • 2.0x (Standard): Suitable for quilting cottons or casual looks.
  • 2.5x (Deluxe): The industry standard for most drapes.
  • 3.0x (Maximum): Used for sheers or very luxurious, heavy drapes.

3. Calculation Formulas

Step A: Total Width
Calculate the total width to cover: (Bracket Width × Fullness) + 2" (for side overlap).

Step B: Number of Panels
Divide total width by your fabric bolt width (usually 54") and round up.

Step C: Cut Length

  • Rod Pocket: Desired Length + 8.5" + (Rod Circumference / 2)
  • Grommet/Pleated: Desired Length + 10"
  • Tab Top: Desired Length + 1.5"

Sewing Tips

Always buy a little extra fabric for pattern matching. If your fabric has a repeating pattern (repeat), add one full vertical repeat length for every panel to ensure they align perfectly.
