What is a Cord of Wood?

A cord is a unit of measure for firewood volume. A full cord is defined as a stack of wood measuring 4 feet high x 4 feet wide x 8 feet long, totaling 128 cubic feet.

What is a Face Cord?

A face cord (sometimes called a "rick") is a stack of wood that is 4 feet high by 8 feet long, but only as deep as the length of the logs (typically 16 inches).

Since a standard cord is 48 inches (4 feet) deep, and a typical face cord is 16 inches deep, a face cord is approximately 1/3 of a full cord.

How to Measure

To calculate the amount of wood you have, stacking it neatly is essential. Measure the:

  • Length of the stack.
  • Height of the stack.
  • Width (or depth) of the logs/stack.

Our calculator converts these measurements into cubic feet and determines how many cords you have.
