How to Calculate Business Days
Business days, also known as working days or weekdays, are the days when most businesses operate. In the United States, this typically means Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. This calculator helps you determine the number of business days between two dates or find a specific date by adding or subtracting business days.
What Are Business Days?
Business days are typically defined as:
- Weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
- Excluding: Saturdays and Sundays (weekends)
- Optionally Excluding: Public holidays recognized by businesses
Business Days = Total Calendar Days - Weekend Days - Holidays
Where holidays fall on weekdays within the date range.
U.S. Federal Holidays
The United States recognizes 11 federal holidays each year:
- New Year's Day - January 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Third Monday of January
- Presidents' Day - Third Monday of February
- Memorial Day - Last Monday of May
- Juneteenth - June 19
- Independence Day - July 4
- Labor Day - First Monday of September
- Columbus Day - Second Monday of October
- Veterans Day - November 11
- Thanksgiving - Fourth Thursday of November
- Christmas Day - December 25
Common Use Cases
- Project Planning: Calculate delivery dates based on working days
- Legal Deadlines: Many legal filings use business days for deadlines
- Payment Terms: Net-10, Net-30 terms often count business days
- HR & Payroll: Calculate work schedules and time off
- Shipping: Estimate delivery times excluding weekends
Calculation Methods
There are two main ways to use this calculator:
- Days Between Dates: Enter a start and end date to find out how many business days fall between them. You can choose whether to include the end date in the count.
- Add/Subtract Days: Start with a date and add or subtract a specific number of business days to find the resulting date. Useful for calculating deadlines.
Example Calculation
If you need to calculate 10 business days from Monday, January 6, 2025:
- Week 1 (Jan 6-10): 5 business days
- Weekend (Jan 11-12): Skipped
- Week 2 (Jan 13-17): 5 business days
- Result: Friday, January 17, 2025
If Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 20) fell within this range, it would extend the deadline by one day.
