How to Calculate Bean Bag Filler Volume
Bean bags lose their fluff over time as the polystyrene beads (EPS) compress. Whether you are filling a new bean bag cover or topping up an old one, knowing the volume is key to buying the right amount of filler.
1. Determine the Volume
The formula depends on the shape of your bean bag:
- Rectangular/Square: Length × Width × Height.
- Cylindrical/Round: π × (Diameter / 2)² × Height.
- Pear Shaped: Approx. similar to cylindrical, usually calculated by average diameter.
2. Convert to Filler Units
Most bean bag filler is sold by **Volume (Liters)** rather than weight, because density can vary. Standard EPS beads have a density of approx **20 kg/m³**.
1 Cubic Meter (m³) = 1000 Liters
1 Cubic Foot (ft³) ≈ 28.3 Liters
Common Bean Bag Sizes
- Kids Size: ~150 - 200 Liters
- Teens / Large Chair: ~250 - 300 Liters
- Adult / XL: ~400 - 500 Liters
- Jumbo / Double: ~800+ Liters
