How to Calculate Battery Charge Time
The time requires to charge a battery depends on how much energy it can store (Capacity) and how fast you are pouring energy into it (Current). However, the process is never 100% efficient; heat and chemical resistance cause some energy loss.
The Formula
To find the time to charge:
Charge Time = (Capacity remaining to fill) / (Current × Efficiency)
Example
Allow's say you have a 5000 mAh phone battery at 0% and a 2000 mA (2 Amp) charger.
- Without Efficiency Loss: 5000 / 2000 = 2.5 hours.
- With 95% Efficiency (Typical for Li-ion): 2000 × 0.95 = 1900 mA effective current.
- Real Time: 5000 / 1900 ≈ 2.63 hours (2h 38m).
Why Efficiency Matters
Lithium-ion batteries (phones, laptops) are very efficient (~95-99%). Older technologies like NiMH or Lead Acid batteries generate more heat during charging, resulting in lower efficiency (~70-90%). This calculator assumes 95% by default, which is safe for most modern electronics.
