Why would I need to calculate the audiobook time?

Regular physical books cannot be customized. The book you get is all you have, and the speed at which you read it will depend solely on your own reading speed. Audiobooks, on the other hand, can be customized. More to the point, the rate at which they are played can be swiftly changed according to your needs. While using audiobooks, you can:

  • Discover how long it will take to listen to an audiobook based on different playback speeds. This knowledge lets you plan your time effectively and choose books that fit your schedule.
  • Identify the optimal playback speed that allows you to enjoy an audiobook within a specific timeframe. Whether you have a limited window or a set deadline, knowing the right playback speed ensures you can savor the entire story within your available time.
  • Determine the appropriate audiobook length to match your required playback speed and available free time. By understanding the relationship between playback speed and audiobook length, you can choose audiobooks that align with your time constraints and speed preferences.

How does the audiobook speed calculator work?

The audiobook calculator uses two main formulas to provide essential information about your listening experience.

Total listening time

The total listening time is calculated by dividing the audiobook length by the chosen playback speed. The formula is simply:

New Duration = Original Duration / Playback Speed

For instance, if you have an audiobook with a calculated audiobook length of 10 hours and you choose a playback speed of 1.5x, the calculation would be 10 / 1.5 = 6.666... hours.

This means that by listening to the audiobook at 1.5x speed, you can complete it in approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes.

Listening time saved

The listening time saved is the difference between the audiobook's original length and the total listening time you got by adjusting the playback speed.

Time Saved = Original Duration - New Duration

Continuing with the previous example, where the audiobook length is 10 hours and the new duration is 6 hours 40 minutes, you save exactly 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Practical Examples

Scenario 1: Complex physics book

Imagine you're listening to a complex physics book and decide to listen to it at a slower pace to enhance your comprehension. If you have approximately 30 hours dedicated to listening, you can find out whether you will manage to listen to the whole book by setting the playback speed to 0.5x.

Scenario 2: Limited free time

Suppose you have only 30 minutes of free time per day and wish to know how the playback speed affects the number of audiobooks you can listen to in a month. Using the audiobook calculator, you can set the playback speed to your desired value and observe the time it will take to listen to the entire book.
