About the 8 Hour Shift Calculator
This tool helps you quickly determine when you can clock out. It takes into account your start time, the length of your shift (typically 8 hours), and any unpaid lunch breaks that extend your day.
How it calculates end time
The calculation is simple time addition:
Start Time + Work Hours + Unpaid Break = End Time
Example
If you start at 9:00 AM for an 8-hour shift and take a 30-minute unpaid lunch:
- 9:00 AM + 8 hours = 5:00 PM
- 5:00 PM + 30 minutes = 5:30 PM
Total time spent at the workplace (Time at Work) would be 8 hours and 30 minutes.
Common Shift Patterns
- 9 to 5: Traditionally includes a paid break or is actually an 8-hour period including lunch (so 7.x hours work).
- 8 to 4:30: Standard 8-hour work day with 30 min unpaid lunch.
- 12 Hour Shifts: Common in healthcare (e.g., 7 AM to 7 PM).
