What is a Steel Weight Calculator?

A steel weight calculator determines the weight of steel in various cross-sectional shapes based on dimensions and length. Common shapes include round bar, square bar, flat bar (plate), pipe, tube, angle iron, and channel. Knowing the weight of steel components is essential for structural engineering, fabrication estimates, crane load planning, and freight shipping.

The calculation works by first computing the cross-sectional area of the shape, multiplying by the length to get volume, and then multiplying by the steel density (0.2836 lb/cu in for mild steel) to get weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate pipe weight?

Pipe weight is based on the cross-sectional area of the pipe wall (outer circle minus inner circle) multiplied by length and density. You need the outside diameter and wall thickness, or the schedule number and nominal pipe size.

Does stainless steel weigh more than carbon steel?

Stainless steel (304/316) is about 2% denser than carbon steel: 0.289 vs 0.2836 lb/cu in. For most practical calculations, the difference is negligible.

What is the weight of a 4x8 sheet of steel?
