Pool Volume Basics

Knowing your swimming pool's volume in gallons is critical for proper chemical dosing, heater sizing, pump selection, and water balance management. An incorrectly calculated volume leads to under- or over-dosing of chemicals, which can create unsafe swimming conditions or damage pool equipment.

Most pools have a variable depth from the shallow end to the deep end. The average depth is calculated by adding the shallow depth and deep depth, then dividing by two. This average depth is then used in the volume formula.

Volume Formulas by Shape

Average Depth = (Shallow Depth + Deep Depth) / 2
Rectangular: Volume = Length × Width × Avg Depth × 7.48
Circular: Volume = π × r² × Avg Depth × 7.48
Oval: Volume = π × (L/2) × (W/2) × Avg Depth × 7.48
Kidney: Volume = Length × Width × Avg Depth × 7.48 × 0.675

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fill a pool?

A standard garden hose delivers about 540 gallons per hour (9 GPM). A 15,000-gallon pool would take approximately 28 hours to fill. Using two hoses cuts the time in half. Some pool owners hire a water delivery truck for faster filling.

How much does the water in my pool weigh?

Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. A 15,000-gallon pool holds approximately 125,100 pounds (62.5 tons) of water. This is important for structural engineering considerations, especially for above-ground or rooftop pools.

How often should I test pool water?

Test chlorine and pH levels at least 2-3 times per week during swimming season. Test total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid levels monthly. After heavy rain, a pool party, or adding chemicals, test again within 24 hours.
