Plywood Estimation Basics

Estimating plywood accurately prevents costly return trips to the lumber yard and reduces waste. The basic calculation is simple: divide the total project area by the area of one sheet, then add a waste factor for cuts, joints, and mistakes.

The standard plywood sheet in the United States is 4 feet by 8 feet (32 square feet). Plywood comes in various thicknesses from 1/4 inch to 1 inch, and in several grades depending on the application. For subflooring and sheathing, CDX or OSB is common. For cabinets and furniture, sanded plywood or hardwood plywood is preferred.

Plywood Calculation Formula

Project Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
Sheets (exact) = Project Area ÷ Sheet Area
Sheets (with waste) = ⌈Sheets (exact) × (1 + Waste%)⌉

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sheets of plywood do I need for a 12x20 room?

A 12x20 foot room has 240 square feet. Dividing by 32 sq ft per standard sheet gives 7.5, so you need 8 sheets minimum. Adding 10% waste: 7.5 x 1.10 = 8.25, rounded up to 9 sheets. Always round up since you cannot buy partial sheets.

How much waste should I allow for plywood?

For rectangular rooms and simple layouts, 5-10% waste is typical. For irregular shapes, angled cuts, or rooms with many openings, allow 10-15%. For small projects where each sheet yields only a few usable pieces, 15-20% waste may be more realistic.

What thickness plywood do I need for subflooring?

For subflooring with joists spaced 16 inches on center, 3/4" plywood (or 23/32" T&G) is standard. For 19.2-inch spacing, 3/4" is required. For 24-inch joist spacing, some codes require 1" or 1-1/8" plywood. Always check local building codes for your area.
