Sod Installation Basics

Sod (or turf) provides an instant lawn compared to seeding, which takes weeks to establish. Sod is sold in rolls of cut grass with a thin layer of soil and roots attached. Proper measurement and ordering ensures you have enough material without excessive waste.

Standard sod rolls in the US measure 2 feet wide by 5 feet long, covering 10 square feet per roll. A standard pallet contains about 50 rolls, covering 500 square feet. Sod weighs approximately 35-40 lbs per roll when fresh.

Sod Calculation Formula

Area with Waste = Length × Width × (1 + Waste%)
Rolls Needed = Area with Waste ÷ Roll Size (sq ft)
Pallets = Total Area ÷ 500 sq ft

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste should I account for?

For rectangular lawns, add 5% waste for trimming and fitting. For irregularly shaped lawns with curves, beds, or many obstacles, add 10-15%. Extra pieces can often be used to fill gaps.

How much does sod weigh?

Fresh sod weighs about 35-40 lbs per standard 10 sq ft roll, or about 1,750-2,000 lbs per pallet. This is important for delivery planning and ensuring your vehicle can handle the load if self-picking.

When is the best time to install sod?

Cool-season sod (bluegrass, fescue) is best installed in early fall or spring. Warm-season sod (bermuda, zoysia) should be installed in late spring to early summer. Avoid installing during extreme heat or freezing conditions.
