Age Calculation Systems Across Cultures
Standard Western System
In most Western countries, a person’s age increases on their birthday. Someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old until their birthday, when they turn 4.
Alternative Age Systems
Different cultures count age in various ways:
Some count years with or without including the current year (a 20-year-old person may be described as being in their 21st year of life)
In one traditional Chinese system, babies are born at age 1, and everyone’s age increases on the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than individual birthdays (a baby born just before New Year could be considered 2 days old but “age 2” after New Year)
Month Calculation Challenges
When calculating age in months and days, end-of-month dates can create ambiguity. For example, from February 28, 2022 to March 31, 2022:
Method 1: Count Feb 28 to Mar 28 as one month, resulting in one month and 3 days
Method 2: Consider both dates as month-end dates, resulting in exactly one month
This ambiguity occurs with varying month lengths (April 30 to May 31, etc). Our calculator uses the first method for consistency.
